The VIC cipher and its variants have been comprehensively tested against K4. Over 52 million configurations were scored across standard VIC, non-standard key schedules, and straddling checkerboard variants. All produced noise-level results. What is the VIC cipher?

The VIC cipher was used by Soviet spy Reino Häyhänen (code name VICTOR) during the Cold War. It is a sophisticated hand cipher that combines a straddling checkerboard with columnar and disrupted diagonal transpositions, all keyed from a single set of inputs (phrase, date, personal number, keygroup).

Why test it on K4? Ed Scheidt (retired Chairman of the CIA Cryptographic Center) studied NSA cryptographic methods during his Army service and spent 26 years at CIA, where the VIC cipher was studied extensively after its discovery in 1953. Sanborn stated K4 uses “two systems of enciphering,” and VIC is a real-world precedent for combining substitution (checkerboard) with multiple transpositions in a single hand-executable system.

K2 connection: The VIC cipher uses a straddling checkerboard with row labels derived from key generation. K2 contains coordinate-like numbers whose purpose in the broader Kryptos system is unknown; whether they relate to VIC-style parameters has not been established.
